Notes from the Nest
A Quiet Moment of Friendship in the Owls’ Nest
A little hand squeezed tight, trying not to let go of my hand. He was feeling a little sad that Mom had to go. We slowly walked to see what everyone was doing, and eventually, something caught his attention. He pulled my hand so we could get closer. A child was putting blocks around animals. He noticed us watching him and said, “I’m trying to build a home.” “I wonder if L wants to help you build the home?” I asked. He looked down atthe home, looked up at us, then handed a block to the child watching. No words were needed. Suddenly, I felt the cold air on my hand and realized that he had let my hand go. For the next few minutes, the two children sat together and built the home. Therewas no exchange of words, just blocks being handed over from one hand to another, silent and peaceful.
This is just one example of the beautiful moments I get to witness everyday. The Owls children are kind, caring, thoughtful, and welcoming. As I reflect on the month filled with opportunities to think about friendship, kindness, and community building, I truly appreciate the gift each and every child brings to our class.

“Children need the freedom to appreciate the infinite resources of their hands, their eyes and their ears, the resources of forms, materials, sounds and colours”.
