About Us

Beginnings

Founded in 2014, Terra Nova Nature School is a unique partnership between the Thompson Community Association and the City of Richmond. This community-based model is at the forefront of our work, as we endeavour to create programs that are accessible, equitable, and affordable to families. The concept of community underpins all our teachings as we believe our world will be a better place when people are in community with each other and the natural world.

What we do

We offer nature-based programming that nurtures curiosity, creativity and confidence through responsive, inquiry-based learning. Our educational programs invite children and families to learn outdoors, guided by an emergent, place-based curriculum inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy and the Forest School movement. Here, children are encouraged to explore, ask questions, and build meaningful relationships with the natural world and one another.

Intentions

Our mission is to connect young children with their community and the outdoor landscape through direct experiences with nature and gardening on the Terra Nova Rural Parklands. We believe the whole community benefits when children learn to value and care for natural resources, participate in a local food system, and express their ideas, knowledge, and perspectives in diverse and creative ways.
