Beyond 4 Walls – After School Program

The pre-teen group is a special age, toggling between innocence and wild abandonment and maturity. This program allows time for the youth to connect, guide some of their own learning and participate in activities that stretch their comfort level. Activities may include cooking, researching soil and water, gardening and big game play.

Time spent outside helps this age group decrease their reliance on screens for entertainment and builds relationships to the real world. The youth are exposed to concepts of the more-than-human, learning to value each and every part of our ecosystem.

Rolling Into Adventure: Our Soap Box Car Journey

During our winter season, a simple idea sparked big excitement—what if we could roll down the big hill using one of our wagons? Before trying the big slope, the children eagerly tested their wagon on smaller hills, observing how it moved and sharing their ideas to improve it. From these playful experiments, a new idea began to grow: building our very own soap box car!

We started by sketching our ideas on large sheets of paper, filling them with creative designs, followed by hands-on mock-up builds. Soon, the excitement spread to our 11–13-year-old group, who joined alongside the 8–10s. While the younger children focused on the style and look of the car, the older group became deeply engaged in thinking about mechanical components, size, and materials. It has been amazing to see such collaboration and curiosity across ages. We are now so excited to begin the new season by bringing these ideas to life and building a real soap box car together!
